The EU Commission has agreed to new rules aimed at limiting the spread of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) by restricting blood products used in feed, the BBC reported.

The EU rejected an outright ban on live pig imports. France last week said it would suspend imports of live pigs and sperm from the United States, Canada, Japan and Mexico.

The new EU rules require that products such as spray dried pig plasma used in feed given to weaned piglets can be imported only after they have been heat treated. The products must then be stored for six weeks to kill any virus that might have contaminated the blood after the treatment, according to the article.
The EU decided against a ban on live pig imports because very few live animals are brought in from Canada and the United States, the article said.
