It was a big week for U.S. corn planting.

In the week ending May 11, USDA reported 59 percent of the U.S. corn crop in major producing states had been planted, up from just 29 percent planted a week ago and even a shade ahead of the five-year average of 58 percent planted by this time of year.

By this time last year, just 26 percent of the corn crop was planted.

According to USDA’s weekly Crop Progress report, 18 percent of the corn crop had emerged, up from 7 percent last week and just 5 percent by this time last year.

Emergence still lags the five-year average, however, which is 25 percent by this time of year.
Soybeans

USDA reported 20 percent of the U.S. soybean crop planted in major producing states, up from 5 percent planted a week ago and 5 percent by this time last year. On average over the past five years, 21 percent of the soybean crop has been planted by now.
