Source: MEATINGPLACE, 6/6/14 As many as 8 million pigs may have been lost due to porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv), livestock economist Steve Meyer projected, according to the Daily Livestock Report. Earlier Meyer’s estimate was 7 million. The projection comes as the disease continues to roil the pig pork industry and USDA’s federal order requiring producers to report any new cases to federal or state animal health authorities.
At issue are pork supplies going into summer. Meyer and fellow livestock economist Len Steiner predict “larger shortages are ahead of us.”
