Pork, beef prices soared in May, USDA says

USDA reported retail pork prices jumped 12.2 percent in May compared to a year ago, while beef and veal prices climbed 10.7 percent and poultry prices were up 2.6 percent.


Compared to April, pork prices in May were up 3.2 percent, beef and veal were up 0.1 percent and poultry prices were up 1.2 percent.


In the monthly update of its Food Prices Index, USDA estimated prices of food away from home in May rose by 2.2 percent compared to a year ago and rose 0.2 percent from April.


Overall food at home prices rose by 2.7 percent from a year ago and rose by 0.6 percent from April.


For the full year, USDA continues to expect retail pork prices to increase in a range of 3 percent to 4 percent, with beef and veal prices rising by 5.5 percent to 6.5 percent and poultry also seen up 3 percent to 4 percent.
