Text of StoryAll hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2014 totaled 7.7 million head, down 3% from March 1, 2014. Market hogs, at 6.84 million head, were down 15% from last year and 3% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 860,000 head, down 1% from the previous year and down 1% from March. The State’s pig crop during the March - May 2014 period totaled 3.83 million head, down 17% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 440,000 sows 20,000 less from the same time last year.  Pigs saved per litter averaged 8.7 which is down from the 10.05 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 445,000 sows during the June - August 2014 and the September–November 2014 quarters. North Carolina ranks 3rd nationally, behind Iowa and Minnesota, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
