WEATHER SUMMARY
MAY 2014: The state recorded above normal temperatures throughout the month of May and sporadic precipitation with the heaviest rainfall reported the week ending May 18th. Farmers stayed busy planting crops and mowing hay.  As of May 25, corn planting was almost complete, while cotton, peanuts and tobacco transplant plantings were more than half complete. Topsoil moisture was rated at 1% very short, 18% short, 65% adequate and 16% surplus.
WINTER WHEAT
Winter wheat production in North Carolina is expected to total 45.6 million bushels for 2014, down 13% from last year’s production of 52.4 million. Yield is forecast at 60 bushels per acre. This estimate is 3 bushels per acre higher than the 2013 yield of 57 bushels.
SWEET POTATOES
Sweet potato production in 2013 totaled 10.6 million hundredweight, a 15% decrease from the 2012 production of 12,400 million. Sweet potato acres harvested in 2013 decreased 15% from 62,000 acres to 53,000 acres. Yield, at 200 cwt per acre, was unchanged from the previous year.

• Corn $5.15 per bushel
• Peanuts $0.257 per pound 
• Soybeans $14.70  per bushel 
• Winter Wheat  $5.95 per bushel
CHICKEN EGGS South Atlantic Region: Broiler-Type eggs in incubators on May 1, 2014 totaled 246,971,000. The total was up 4% from the May 2013 total of 238,585,000 eggs. The total number of Egg-Type eggs in incubators decreased 4% from 4,767,000 on May 1, 2013 to 4,562,000 eggs on May 1, 2014.
