On July 7, Commissioner Troxler had the opportunity to travel down east and view crop damage caused by Hurricane Arthur. The commissioner traveled to Hyde County where the majority of the damage was done to the corn crop. Damage appeared to be greater in fields where corn was more mature and stalks were taller.

Hyde County ranks third in North Carolina in corn production. Farmers in the area were anticipating a corn yield of 200 bushels per acre or more. They now expect substantial reductions in yield. In some instances, it might not be possible for farmers to harvest their crop at all.

In addition to the corn crop, tobacco and cotton crops also took a hit from Arthur. In Beaufort County, the storm's winds and rain caused tobacco damage. Farmers have shared their concerns that they will be unable to bring machinery to the field in time for harvest.
