WEATHER SUMMARY
JUNE 2014: Average temperatures were recorded at above normal during the month of June and many reports indicated dry to very dry conditions throughout the state.Afternoon storms and tropical rainfall late in the month alleviated some of these conditions. By June 29th, soil moisture level ratings were recorded to be 5% very short, 29% short, 60% adequate and only 6% surplus. Farming activities included planting of sorghum, soybeans, sweet potatoes and Burley tobacco. Farmers also spent time harvesting wheat and cutting hay. The peach harvest had begun by the end of the month and had progressed to 24% harvested.


OFF FARM GRAIN STOCKS
Off farm grain stocks reported for Soybeans totaled 3,425,000 as of June 1. This was 26% lower than the 4,615,000 bushels reported on June 1, 2013.

Soybeans $14.60   per bushel
Wheat  $5.60  per bushel

CHICKEN EGGS
South Atlantic Region: Broiler-Type eggs in incubators on June 1, 2014 totaled 249,825,000. The total was up 3% from the June 2013 total of 241,791,000 eggs. The total number of Egg-Type eggs in incubators on June 1, 2014 was down 12% from 4,889,000 the previous year to 4,315,000 eggs.


SOWS FARROWING
North Carolina producers intend to farrow 445,000 sows during the June–August 2014 and the September–November 2014 quarters.


PIG CROP
The State’s pig crop during the March–May 2014 period totaled 3.83 million head, down 17% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 440,000 sows 20,000 less from the same time last year. 


PIGS PER LITTER
The number of pigs saved per litter averaged 8.7 which is down from the 10.05 pigs saved during the same quarter last year.


HOGS & PIGS
Hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms June 1, 2014 totaled 7.7 million head, down 3% from March 1, 2014.
