USDA reports rising egg sets/chicks placed

Hatcheries in the United States weekly program set 213 million eggs in incubators during the week ending August 16, 2014, up two percent from a year ago.


Hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 205 million eggs in incubators, also up two percent from the year earlier.


Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week in the United States was 83 percent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.


Broiler growers in the United States weekly program placed 175 million chicks for meat production during the week ending August 16, up one percent from a year ago.


Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly program placed 169 million chicks for meat production during the week, also up one percent from the year earlier.


Cumulative placements from December 29, 2013 through August 16, 2014 for the United States were 5.68 billion. Cumulative placements were down slightly from the same period one year ago.
