USDA reported U.S. frozen stocks of beef on July 31 were up 2 percent from the previous month but down 21 percent from last year, further evidence that cattle supplies continue to decline year over year.

Frozen supplies of pork bellies were down 23 percent from June but were still up 130 percent from a year ago, reflecting buyer stockpiling the past several months over worries about reduced supplies due to the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV).

Frozen pork supplies were down 2 percent from the previous month and down 3 percent from last year, according to USDA’s monthly Cold Storage report.

Total stocks of chicken were up 8 percent from the previous month but down 13 percent from last year.
Total pounds of turkey in freezers were up 7 percent from last month but down 16 percent from July 31, 2013.
