The U.S. Poultry and Egg Association (USPOULTRY) has released a video explaining why and how antibiotics are used in the poultry industry. The video features two experts, Randy Singer, professor of epidemiology in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Medicine at the University of Minnesota, and Charles Hofacre, professor of the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center in the Department of Population Health at the University of Georgia.
Singer and Hofacre provide information on why antibiotics are given to poultry, how antibiotics are provided, how the decision is made to treat with antibiotics, how antibiotic use in poultry affects antibiotic resistance in foodborne pathogens, how flocks raised without antibiotics are treated if they get sick, the difference between medically and non-medically important antibiotics and the future changes for antibiotic usage in poultry production.
The video can be viewed on USPOULTRY’s YouTube page by clicking here.
