New reports of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDV) cases are waning, according to reports from both Canadian and American sources.

In Ontario in particular, just five new cases have been found since April, according to a report from Farmscape, a multimedia news and information content provider sponsored by Saskatchewan Pork Development Board and the Manitoba Pork Council. That’s compared to the 60 cases identified between January and April — when the virus was first found in Ontario.

Meanwhile, USDA’s National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reported that 53 tests for PEDV proved positive out of 672 conducted in the week ended Sept. 5, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians’ latest update. That compares with 204 positives recorded in April.

So far, 8,316 positives have been reported by USDA since Nov. 1, 2013.

The same report also officially added Utah as the 31st state to report cases of PEDV, with one sick animal.

The news comes on the heels of an announcement earlier this month by animal health company Zoetis that the USDA granted a conditional license for a vaccine to help fight PEDV. The vaccine is expected to be available to veterinarians and pork producers later this month.
