In honor of the Food Safety Forum that took place at the end of August, this month's featured division is Food and Drug Protection. The Food and Drug Protection Division administers programs designed to assure consumers in North Carolina that foods, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics are safe, wholesome, unadulterated, properly labeled, registered, manufactured, stored and distributed in a manner that ensures their safety and efficacy to consumers and the environment.

The framework in which the divison operates originates from the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The divison strives for safe products with truthful, informative and non-deceptive labeling in all three areas designated by the law. Foods should be pure and wholesome, safe to eat, and produced under sanitary conditions. Drugs and devices should be safe and effective for their intended uses. Cosmetics must be safe and manufactured from approved ingredients.

For any questions regarding food production businesses, drug manufacturing laws, or any other food- and drug-related topics, please visit the
division's website.
