The National Pork Board uses search engine optimization (SEO) on an as-needed basis to direct consumers to the association’s information online, Jarrod Sutton, the board’s vice president for social responsibility, told Meatingplace in an email.
A Reuters article on Wednesday said the pork board planned to use the practice to counter a PBS Frontline program, “The Trouble with Antibiotics,” that ran Tuesday evening.

Search engine optimization involves writing website content with the aim of gaining a higher ranking in search engine results.
Sutton said the pork board monitors both social and mainstream media for topics that could generate consumer attention, working with the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) and U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance (USFRA).

SEO is “an extremely cost effective and efficient way to direct consumers to our archive of available information,” Sutton said.
When the pork board implements SEO, it is paid for by NPPC, he said.
