WEATHER SUMMARY
SEPTEMBER 2014: Normal precipitation and average temperatures dominated the weather most of September. The exception was the week ending September 14 where as much as 7 and 8 inches were reported in  some locations.  By the end of the month farmers were concentrating on harvesting corn, sweet potatoes and tobacco.  As of September 28th  statewide topsoil moisture levels were at 1% very short, 9% short, 74% adequate and 16% surplus.  


SEPTEMBER PRELIMINARY PRICES RECEIVED
• Corn $4.10 per bushel • Soybeans $11.30  per bushel • Winter Wheat $4.60 per bushel


CHICKEN EGGS
South Atlantic Region: Broiler-Type eggs in incubators on September 1, 2014 totaled 246,791,000. The total was up 3% from the September 1, 2013 total of 240,142,000 eggs. The total number of Egg-Type eggs in incubators on September 1, 2014 decreased 9% from 4,824,000 eggs in 2013 to 4,379,000.


SOWS FARROWING
North Carolina producers intend to farrow 450,000 sows during the September – November 2014 quarter and 445,000 sows during the December 2014 – February 2015 quarter.   


PIG CROP
The State’s pig crop during the June – August 2014 period totaled 4.37 million head, down 8% from the same period last year.


PIGS PER LITTER
The number of pigs saved per litter during the June – August 2014 quarter averaged at 9.5, which is down from the 10.1 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. 


HOGS AND PIGS
Hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on September 1, 2014 totaled 8.4 million head, down 10% from the same time last year.
