Nearly 500 more signatures were added to a petition already submitted to North Carolina officials seeking to block construction of a Sanderson Farms poultry plant in Cumberland County.

An estimated 60 opponents of the proposed plant — wearing the informal red color of the opposition — attended the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners meeting to reinforce their position, according to a report in the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer. The group reiterated that it does not oppose putting a business in the Cedar Creek Business Park, but asked for an “environmentally friendly business” versus one that the group feels could threaten local environmental concerns.

The commissioners did not provide an immediate response to the additions to the petition, the paper reported. Sanderson has been considering building a second North Carolina chicken processing plant, but was met with opposition even before plans were formally announced.
