An outbreak of H5N2 avian influenza that began earlier this month with two British Columbia poultry farms has now expanded to include 10 farms and about 233,800 birds, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The latest farm, confirmed Dec. 13 in Langley, B.C., contained 53,000 table egg layers. The previous nine farms were all broiler or turkey growers. All infected poultry must be culled.
CFIA last week established control zones to restrict the movement of poultry and stem the potential for the spread of the highly pathogenic virus. Other Canadian officials reportedly believe the H5N2 exposure could still spread to other poultry farms, according to an online report.
Meanwhile, Singapore has become the ninth country to ban the import of poultry or poultry products from British Columbia, a list that includes the United States and Mexico.
