This fall, residents deluged the Cumberland County commissioners with emails opposing a Sanderson Farms chicken plant.
By a ratio of more than 4-to-1, opponents wrote their displeasure about the proposed $113 million plant, which would require more than 500 chicken farms in eastern North Carolina and the development of fields to spray treated wastewater from the slaughterhouse.
