2014 annual NC crop summary

Corn for grain

• North Carolina farmers harvested 840,000 acres of corn for grain in 2014, down 90,000 acres from 2013. • Yield averaged 132 bushels per acre, down 10 bushels from the 2013 record of 142 bushels per acre. • Production at 103.0 million bushels was 16% lower than the 2013 total of 122.1 million.    


Cotton

• 2014 cotton acres harvested remained unchanged from the 460,000 acres harvested in 2013. • Yield averaged 1,049 pounds per acre, setting a new record from the 2012 high of 1,014 pounds. • Production at 1million bales was up 31% from the 766,000 bales produced in 2013


Peanuts

• North Carolina farmers harvested 93,000 acres of peanuts in 2014, 12,000 acres more than the 81,000 acres harvested in 2013.  • Yield per acre at 4,300 pounds was up 400 pounds per acre from the 2013 yield of 3,900 pounds and 200 pounds from the 2012 record. • Production at 400 million pounds was up 27% 316 million pounds of peanuts produced in 2013    


Soybeans

• Soybean acres harvested in 2014 totaled 1.75 million. This was up 280,000 acres from the 1.45 million acres harvested in 2013. • Yield averaged 40 bushels per acre. 6.5 bushels higher than 2013 and tied to the 2012 record.   • Production totaled 69.2 million bushels, up 42% from last year and 7.6 million bushels higher than the record 61.6 million produced in 2012.

Sweet Potatoes

• North Carolina farmers harvested 72,000 acres of sweet potatoes in 2014, up 19,000 acres from 2013. • Yield averaged 220 cwt. per acre, up 20 cwt. from the 2013 record for 200 cwt. per acre • Production at 15.8 million cwt. was up 49% from last year’s production of 10.6 million cwt and 3.0 million cwt higher than the record set in 2011.  


Tobacco

• North Carolina farmers harvested 193,400 acres of tobacco in 2014, up 11,500 acres from last year. • Burley tobacco yield averaged 1,900 pounds per acre while Flue-Cured tobacco yield averaged 2,350 pounds per acre. • Production was up 25% for flue-cured tobacco at 451.2 million pounds and unchanged for burley tobacco at 2.66 million pounds.
