The National Academy of Sciences is recommending four areas of focus for animal science research with an aim toward helping the industry meet a steep projected increase in global demand for protein.

A new report from the group says U.S. research should focus on breeding technology and genetics; impact of environmental changes; finding alternatives to medically important antibiotics; and animal welfare issues such as reducing injury and stress.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates a 73 percent increase in meat and egg consumption by 2050 as per capita consumption more than doubles in Asia and Africa and rises significantly in Latin America and the Caribbean, the report notes.

Priorities for global research should include understanding barriers to adoption of new technologies and the elimination of animal diseases, according to the report.

Among those sponsoring the report were the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, National Cattlemen's Beef Association, National Pork Board, Tyson Foods Inc., USDA and U.S. Poultry and Egg Association.
