NC January farm report

DECEMBER 2014 CROP WEATHER:  The state received widespread rainfall this month with some areas receiving over 4.0 inches. Average temperatures were above normal for this time of the year. Reported crop progress data for the week showed soybeans harvest at 96% and sorghum at 97%. Days suitable for field work 3.3. Topsoil moisture 2% short, 57% adequate and 41% surplus. Subsoil moisture 4% short, 68% adequate and 28% surplus.


SOYBEAN OFF FARM GRAIN STOCKS Soybean off farm grain stocks totaled 17,630,000 bushels on December 1, 2014, an 8% increase to the 16,384,000 bushels reported on December 1, 2013.


DECEMBER PRELIMINARY PRICES RECEIVED
• Corn $4.45   per bushel 
• Cotton  $0.622   per pound 
• Peanuts $0.259   per pound 
• Soybeans $10.10    per bushel 
• Winter Wheat $5.20   per bushel

CHICKEN EGGS
South Atlantic Region: Broiler-Type eggs in incubators on December 1, 2014 totaled 252,448,000. The total was up 4% from the December 1, 2013 total of 242,131,000 eggs. The total number of Egg-Type eggs in incubators on December 1, 2014 decreased 22% from 5,232,000 eggs in 2013 to 4,099,000 in 2014.


SOWS FARROWING
North Carolina producers intend to farrow 440,000 sows during the December 2014 – February 2015 quarter and 445,000 sows during the March – May 2015 quarter. 


PIG CROP
The State’s pig crop during the September – November 2014 period totaled 4.45 million head, up 5% from the same period last year.


PIGS PER LITTER
Pigs saved per litter during the September-November 2014 period averaged at 10.0, which is up from the 9.5 pigs saved during the same quarter last year.


HOGS AND PIGS
Hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms December 1, 2014 totaled 8.6 million head, up 4% from September 1.
