The N.C. Division of Coastal Management has received the first consistency submissions for seismic surveying in the Atlantic Ocean related to oil and gas resource development off the North Carolina coast.

Spectrum Geo, Inc. and GX Technology are proposing to conduct separate Marine Geophysical Surveys via 2D seismic surveying off the North Carolina coast. The surveying will be used to gather geological and geophysical data that could provide information about the feasibility of future development of offshore oil and gas resources. The Spectrum Geo survey would be conducted during the second quarter of 2015 and would involve two survey vessels towing seismic airgun arrays. The GXT survey would be conducted between July and December 2015, and would involve one vessel towing seismic airgun arrays.

A more thorough description of each of the proposed projects is available on the division’s website at: http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/cm/offshore-surveys.

The surveys would take place in federal waters, outside of North Carolina’s coastal zone. State law does not require coastal development permits for projects outside the state’s coastal zone, but the federal Coastal Zone Management Act requires federal applicants to coordinate with the state for any proposed activity that affects land use, water use or any natural resources within the zone.

Public comments on the proposal are being accepted. Please mail written comments by March 2 to Braxton Davis, DCM Director, 400 Commerce Avenue, Morehead City, NC 28557. Comments may also be sent via email to Public Information Officer Michele Walker at Michele.Walker@ncdenr.gov.

Additional consistency submissions for offshore seismic surveys are expected in the coming weeks. The division’s website will be updated at the above link as each submission is received.
