N.C. Coastal Resources Commission will meet Feb. 18-19 in Atlantic Beach

The N.C. Coastal Resources Commission, or CRC, will discuss sea-level rise, sandbag use and other coastal issues at a meeting next week in Atlantic Beach.
The CRC will meet at 1 p.m. Feb. 18 and 9 a.m. Feb. 19 at the Hilton DoubleTree, 2717 West Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach. The meeting is open to the public.
Items on the CRC’s agenda include:
• Sea-Level Rise Report Update – N.C. Division of Coastal Management staff will present an update on the panel’s draft report on sea-level rise.
• Sandbag Use – Division of Coastal Management staff will discuss the use of sandbags for temporary erosion control on the oceanfront, and will present an inventory of existing sandbag structures in North Carolina.
• CRC Rule Development – The CRC will consider draft rule language for alternatives to its current static vegetation line rules. The CRC will also consider for adoption proposed amendments to 15A NCAC 7K .0208 Single Family Residences Exempted, which would amend adjacent property owner notification requirements to streamline exemptions for single-family residences in the Estuarine Shoreline Area of Environmental Concern.
• State Ports Inlet Management AEC – Division of Coastal Management staff will present stakeholder feedback related to the development of a State Ports Inlet Management Area of Environmental Concern.
• Variances – The CRC will hear one request for a variance from its rules.
• Public Hearing – Members of the public may comment on proposed amendments to 15A NCAC 7H .1500 GP for Excavation of Upland Basins, which would streamline permits associated with upland boat basins.
• Public Input and Comment – Members of the public may comment on CRC issues at 11:45 a.m. Thursday.
• Closed Session – The commission will meet in closed session for a briefing on ongoing litigation.
The Coastal Resources Advisory Council, a group that provides the CRC with local government perspectives, will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at the Hilton DoubleTree.

The Coastal Resources Commission establishes policies for the N.C. Coastal Management program and adopts rules and policies regarding coastal development within areas of environmental concern.
