A highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza has been confirmed at a second commercial poultry farm in California.

The farm, in Kings County, is a 114,000-bird chicken farm in the San Joaquin Valley, according to a report in the Capital Press.

The USDA reported the outbreak of H5N8 avian influenza to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) on Friday. The outbreak is the latest iteration of a strain that’s been present along the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds. It first was reported to the OIE in early January.

The same strain was detected in late January in a commercial turkey flock owned by Foster Farms.

With this latest report, the H5N8 strain has been detected further south than ever before in this outbreak, the Capital Press noted.

The name of the farm has not been released.
