President Vetoes Keystone

This past Tuesday, I was disappointed in President Obama’s decision to veto the Keystone XL Pipeline. This bipartisan project would have helped create thousands of jobs, lower our energy costs, and get America one step closer toward energy independence.
This is a common sense bill that is supported by a large coalition of groups ranging from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to the AFL-CIO as well as a majority of the American people.
The President once again has chosen to put politics above the American people. We will do everything possible to try to convince enough Democrats to vote with us to override the President's veto.

Roundtable Discussions in the District
During the first district work period I met with county commissioners and mayors from all across the district. This was an opportunity for me to discuss the needs of their communities and how our office can help.
As you can imagine, jobs, the economy, infrastructure needs, and the growing threat of terrorism were the predominate topics. They are looking to our office to help navigate federal agencies and advocate for policies that will get our economy moving again.
I look forward to working with these leaders and every concerned citizen to help address the needs of our communities. We will continue to strive to be a voice for all of the 7th Congressional District.

Legislative Update
This week the House passed a seven day funding extension for the DHS. I am committed to stopping the President’s unconstitutional executive actions on immigration and will work with my colleagues to make sure this is addressed during conference with the Senate.
The House also passed several education related bills including the STEM Education Act of 2015 (H.R. 1020). This bill redefines STEM education to include computer science and encourages further research on extra-curricular STEM programs. The House also passed H.R. 529 which improves and strengthens 529 college savings plans that so many NC families use to send their kids to college.
