State officials will conduct a public hearing in Morehead City April 9 to gather comments on proposed offshore seismic surveys related to the exploration and potential development of oil and gas resources off the coast of North Carolina.

The hearing will be held from 5-9 p.m. at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, 3505 Arendell St., Morehead City.

The N.C. Division of Coastal Management, or DCM, has received federal consistency submissions from four companies that have applied for federal permits to conduct seismic surveys in the Atlantic Ocean, with additional submissions expected in the coming weeks. A more thorough description of each of the proposed projects is available on the division’s website at: http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/cm/offshore-surveys.

The surveys would take place entirely in federal waters, beyond three nautical miles offshore and outside of North Carolina’s legally recognized coastal zone. State permits are not required for projects outside the state’s coastal zone. But the federal Coastal Zone Management Act requires applicants for federal permits to coordinate with the state for any proposed activity that may directly affect land or water uses, or any natural resources, within the state’s coastal zone.

Public comments on the proposals may be submitted in person or in writing at the April 9 hearing, or in writing to DCM Director Braxton Davis, 400 Commerce Ave., Morehead City, N.C., 28557. Comments may also be sent via email to DCM’s public information officer Michele Walker at Michele.Walker@ncdenr.gov.
