USDA data show weekly broiler slaughter running about 3 percent above a year ago, with average weights also up, analysts wrote in the Daily Livestock Report.

“Higher slaughter and heavier birds have set the stage for a notable increase in broiler production,” the analysts said.
Broiler production, adjusted for differences in slaughter days, is up 4.2 percent on average over the last four months, compared with a year ago, the analysts said, while weights are up 1.5 percent over the same four-month period.

On Monday, USDA said leading breeders placed 7.92 million broiler-type pullet chicks during February for future hatchery supply flocks, up 9 percent from a year ago.

The latest USDA cold storage report also showed increases in frozen beef, pork and poultry supplies that were viewed as bearish for prices.
