March 2015 hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2015 totaled 8.4 million head, down 2% from December 1,
2014. Market hogs, at 7.51 million head, were up 8% from last year but down 3% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 890,000 head, this was up 2% from last year and 1% last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the December 2014 – February 2015 period totaled 4.18 million head, up 14% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 440,000 sows.

Pigs saved per litter averaged 9.5, which is up from the 8.4 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 430,000 sows during the March–May 2015 and 445,000 during the June–August 2015 quarters. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
