Approval of EU Trade Agreements Requires a Double Dose of Democracy. Once trade negotiators have reached an agreement, EU governments—together with the European Parliament—will examine the text and can approve it or reject it. EU law states that trade agreements—like TTIP—can only be signed if they are agreed by both the governments of the 28 EU Member States and by a majority in the European Parliament. All EU governments are democratically elected. The 751 Members of the European Parliament are directly elected in EU-wide elections every five years (most recently in 2014). Hence, EU trade agreements are subject to a double democratic guarantee. For more of this story, click here.
