Heads of DENR, EPA to speak at international meeting on environment next week in Raleigh

The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Secretary Donald R. van der Vaart and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Administrator Gina McCarthy are scheduled to address scientists and policy-makers from across the globe at an environmental conference next week in Raleigh.

Van der Vaart will serve as a panelist and McCarthy as the featured speaker during the June 22 keynote session of the Air & Waste Management Association’s Annual Conference and Exhibition. The keynote session for the 108th annual meeting starts at 2:45 p.m. in Ballroom BC of the Raleigh Convention Center, 500 South Salisbury St. The conference is the group’s first national meeting held in North Carolina and is expected to draw about 1,500 environmental professionals to the Triangle June 22-25. 

The conference will feature a technical program with more than 400 presentations covering air pollution control, waste management, alternative fuels, policies and regulations, transportation, climate change and other environmental topics.

More than a dozen DENR staff in the agency’s administration as well as the divisions of Air Quality and Waste Management will present papers or participate in panel discussions. Van der Vaart is scheduled to discuss energy development and environmental regulation during a June 24 session. DENR’s Chief Deputy Secretary John C. Evans and the N.C. Division of Waste Management’s Director Linda Culpepper will serve as panelists on a discussion dealing with perspectives on environmental issues, and DENR’s Assistant Secretary Tom Reeder will serve as a panelist for a session on coal ash disposal, containment, spills and reuse. Sheila Holman, director of the Division of Air Quality, plans to serve as a panelist for a session on the EPA’s priorities for 2015-2016.
