The U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) invests in applied research and development of cost-competitive algae-based biofuels and bioproducts that offer promising alternatives to petroleum-based fuels and chemicals. To further this work, the Energy Department today announced that six projects will receive up to $18 million in funding to develop technologies to produce valuable bioproducts and achieve higher biomass yields, in order to significantly reduce the price of algal biofuels. Those projects include:

• Producing Algae and Co-Products for Energy (PACE), led by Colorado School of Mines
• Marine Algae Industrialization Consortium (MAGIC), led by Duke University
• Global Algae Innovations, Inc.
• Arizona State University
• University of California, San Diego
• Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

The Energy Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) accelerates the development and deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and market-based solutions that strengthen U.S. energy security, environmental quality, and economic vitality.
