This week the House passed H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015, by a vote of 275-150. The bill establishes a voluntary nation-wide marketing program that gives consumers access to consistent, reliable information while protecting advancements in food production technology and innovation. Without uniformity in food labeling among states, our food producers would be forced to follow different standards in each state. This creates an unnecessary and costly patchwork of regulations that ultimately gets handed down to consumers causing their grocery bill to increase. In fact, a study done by a Cornell University professor found that state labeling mandates could raise grocery costs for a family of four by up to $500 per year.
