US Rep. Patrick McHenry: Reining in Washington bureaucrats

Through 2014, the Obama Administration had added nearly 500,000 pages of regulations to the federal register. In the last five years, 82 of these regulations were major rules--a rule with an economic impact over $100 million. Each year, American businesses are paying just under $2 trillion to comply with this regulatory onslaught. That is money that is not being spent to grow and expand businesses or hire more employees.

This week, the House took action to bring more accountablility to Washington's out-of-control bureaucrats as we passed H.R. 427, the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act. This bill requires federal regulators to submit major regulations--those over $100 million--to Congress for approval. Only after Congress votes, would these regulations go into effect. This is a common sense reform maintaining a check on the power of our federal bureaucracy while also allowing America's business and job creators to continue to grow.
