Dr. Richard H. Linton, dean of NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was recently named to serve on the board of directors of the United States-Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack announced Linton’s appointment to the six-member board earlier this month. BARD is a competitive funding program for mutually beneficial, mission-oriented strategic and applied research of agricultural problems, jointly conducted by American and Israel scientists.

The board of directors oversees operations of an Israeli BARD Fund staff; reviews and approves annual grant funding awards to joint research projects; establishes priorities, goals and strategies for future research; and promotes U.S.-Iraeli cooperation in the agricultural sciences.

Linton, an expert in food microbiology and developing food-safety systems to reduce the risk of foodborne illness, has served as CALS dean since 2012. Before that, he chaired the Department of Food Science and Technology at The Ohio State University and was a professor of food science, center director and unit leader at Purdue University.

Linton earned his bachelor’s degree in biology in 1988 and his master’s and Ph.D. in food science in 1991 and 1994, respectively, all from Virginia Tech.
