Tyson Foods said it has terminated its contract with a farmer who grew chickens for the company after the animal activist group Mercy for Animals shot an undercover video showing mistreatment of chickens.

The video shows workers beating chickens to death with a pole.

“We will not tolerate the unacceptable animal treatment shown in this video. We’re especially concerned about the inappropriate methods used to euthanize sick and injured chickens,” Tyson said in a statement emailed to Meatingplace.

Mercy for Animals said the chickens were intended to be used to make McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

Tyson said there are now no chickens on the farm in the video. The company said it has programs, including third-party auditors, in place to protect the health of all of its animals.

It added that it believes the video does not represent how chickens are treated by the thousands of farmers who are its suppliers.
