Ben Masterson, wearing a wide straw hat against the late summer sun, puts his back into turning a fresh raised bed in the Miksch Garden in Old Salem on Wednesday. Formerly a self-employed carpenter, Masterson, came to Old Salem from living on what he described as "a non-electric farm” in northern Wisconsin.
