Broiler chickens were the third biggest organic farm product sold by American farms in 2014, with sales of $372 million, USDA said in a new report. Sales of all organic farm products, from fruits and vegetables to milk and meat, are up 72 percent in five years, to $5.5 billion, according to the 2014 Organic Survey from USDA’s Agricultural Statistic Service.
Milk was the top-selling organic product, with sales of about $1.1 billion, followed by organic eggs at $420 million.
The industry is poised for more growth, with 39 percent of organic farmers indicating they intend to increase production over the next five years, USDA said. Organic products were produced on 14,093 U.S. farms in 2014.
Ten states – California, Washington, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Wisconsin, Texas, New York, Colorado, Michigan and Iowa – accounted for 78 percent of all U.S. organic sales in 2014, USDA said.
