Ammonia leak stops production at Smithfield Tar Heel plant

Smithfield Foods had to evacuate workers at its large pork production plant in Tar Heel, N.C., after an ammonia leak was discovered early this morning, a spokeswoman told Meatingplace.


“The leak has been handled and no injuries were reported, but employees were evacuated as a precautionary measure,” said Smithfield spokeswoman Kathleen Kirkham.


Operations are expected to resume this afternoon.
