Smithfield Foods had to evacuate workers at its large pork production plant in Tar Heel, N.C., after an ammonia leak was discovered early this morning, a spokeswoman told Meatingplace. “The leak has been handled and no injuries were reported, but employees were evacuated as a precautionary measure,” said Smithfield spokeswoman Kathleen Kirkham.
Operations are expected to resume this afternoon.
