Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) called for GMO legislation to prevent a patchwork of state laws and said she is committed to passing a bill by the end of the year, according to news reports.

Stabenow, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee, told a hearing on biotechnology Wednesday that consumer support for GMO labeling would build steam, but she would not support a bill that stigmatizes biotechnology, according to Iowa Public Radio.

According to Politico, Stabenow told reporters she does not favor an industry-backed bill from Rep. Mike Pompeo (R.-Kan.) called the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act but hasn’t signed onto Sen. Barbara Boxer’s (D-Calif.) Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act either.

The U.S. House in July passed legislation that would prohibit states from enacting mandatory labeling laws for foods containing genetically modified organisms.
