Under a blazing sun bearing down on the Florida peninsula, Silvia Perez, a Guatemalan immigrant, labored in the staked-down tomato fields that stretched into near-infinity, patrolled from above by ragged gangs of black vultures. That day, about a decade ago, her crew chief lifted an eyebrow and nodded to an empty row.
