Federal legislation on GMO food labeling that would block a Vermont law from taking effect in July may now have to wait until early next year, Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) told Agri-Pulse.

Congress is attempting to pass an omnibus spending bill by year-end with several agriculture-related provisions attached to it, including country-of-origin and GMO food labeling.

Stabenow told Agri-Pulse a disagreement over whether electronic disclosure of biotech ingredients should be mandatory was bogging down negotiations on the GMO label issue.

The U.S. House in July passed a legislation that would prohibit states from enacting mandatory labeling laws for foods containing genetically modified organisms. The House bill also would create a new USDA certification process for food makers to apply for a voluntary non-GMO label.
