IARC’s credibility questioned after red meat-cancer determination

Public reaction to the latest report linking cancer and meat — this time from the World Health Organization’s authoritative International Agency for Research on Cancer — can be summed up in one representative tweet among thousands:


“The WHO claims bacon gives you an 18% increased chance of colorectal cancer. Maybe. I say bacon gives you a 100% boost. Guaranteed.”


Instead of putting the controversy over meat and cancer to rest, the announcement and decision-making process itself raised new questions about IARC’s credibility.
