State officials seek public input on Duke Energy environmental permit

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public hearing on a proposed water quality permit for Duke Energy Progress’ Asheville Steam Electric Plant on Jan. 21.


The hearing is being held to receive public comments on a draft industrial stormwater discharge permit for the electrical generating plant, which is in Buncombe County. Wastewater discharges from the facility are covered under a separate water quality permit.


The public hearing will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College’s Ferguson Auditorium, 340 Victoria Road, Asheville. Speaker registration will begin at 5 p.m.


The draft stormwater permit and related documents are available online at: http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/guest/duke-npdes-permits. Printed copies of the draft permit and related documents may be reviewed at the department’s Asheville Regional Office, 2090 U.S. 70 Highway, Swannanoa. To make an appointment to review the documents, please call 828-296-4500. 


Public comments on the draft permit modification should be mailed to: Stormwater Permitting, 1612 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C., 27699-1612.


Public comments may also be submitted by email to: publiccomments@ncdenr.gov. Please be sure to include “Asheville” in the email’s subject line.


The public comment period for the draft stormwater permit ends Jan. 22.
