On a typical day you might think about your upcoming trip to the grocery store or maybe your weekend plans out of town. What you probably don’t think about is whether you are paying the correct price at the store or gas station. For weights and measures inspectors at the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, accuracy at the register and at the gas pump is always top of mind.

Today marks the start of National Weights and Measures Week, a time to promote awareness 0f our inspectors and other weights and measures employees that work behind-the-scenes inspecting retail scales, gas pumps and more for accuracy.

In addition to the grocery store, inspectors check scales at farmers markets, restaurants, scrap metal facilities and tobacco warehouses. In fact, any scale that is used for commerce should be inspected. Inspectors also check gas pumps to make sure that consumers are getting the amount of gas they pay for.

National Weights and Measures week runs March 1-7. It’s held annually during the first week of March to commemorate President John Adams’ signing of the first U.S. weights and measures law on March 2, 1799.
