Dr. James Trybus of Apex has been named director of the North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System. Trybus has been interim director since October.

Trybus will oversee the 90-employee Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System, which includes Rollins Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Raleigh and branch laboratories in Monroe, Arden and Elkin.

“I am pleased to name Dr. Trybus as the director of our veterinary lab system,” said N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “I am confident that he will lead the labs forward and continue to serve both the livestock and poultry industries and companion animal needs of our state through accurate and timely laboratory services.”

Trybus received his undergraduate degree from Old Dominion University and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a veterinary pathology residency at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and he is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. He is a member of American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. From 2007-2013, Trybus was employed by Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory as a veterinary pathologist, and in 2009 he was named the head of diagnostic pathology. He returned to North Carolina in June 2013 to assume responsibilities of pathology services coordinator at Rollins.

The NCVDLS was established in 1947 to assist veterinarians and producers in diagnosing diseases of livestock and poultry. Rollins Laboratory is also part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Animal Health Laboratory Network with the ability to perform rapid molecular diagnostic tests for endemic animal diseases, as well as targeted surveillance and response testing for foreign animal diseases.
