A JBS pork plant in Louisville, Ky., plans to change how it stuns pigs before slaughter, the company confirmed to Meatingplace.
The company discussed its plans to move to the use of CO2, from its current method of electric stunning, at a public meeting on Wednesday. A second meeting is slated for March 31, according to the report.

JBS spokesman Cameron Bruett said the moving to CO2 at the Louisville plant is "consistent with industry trends" and more humane. The company has used this technology at all other JBS pork facilities "with positive results on animal well-being and product quality," he said.

JBS has sought a permit modification for the Louisville facility to accommodate the necessary space for a new building and equipment, but this project has no impact on pork production capacity, Bruett explained.
