From landscape design to small engine repair, NC State horticulture students demonstrated their wide-ranging expertise and nabbed some of the top honors at the 40th Annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition from March 16-19 at Mississippi State University. The team placed seventh overall of 62 colleges and universities.

These students placed in the top 10 in these categories:
• Woody Ornamental ID: 1st – Jake Scott; 2nd – Peyton Daly
• Wood Construction: 3rd – Jake Scott and Dustin Black
• Sales Presentation: 3rd – Stormie Valentine
• Turf and Weed Identification: 4th – Kaitlynn Paxton
• Landscape Maintenance Estimation: 4th – Justin Morgan
• Small Engine Repair: 6th – Grant Hahn
• Exterior Landscape Design: 8th – Justin Morgan
• Interior Landscape Design: 8th – Ethan Garner

It’s not just the students who benefitted from their participation. To raise money to attend, students designed and installed landscapes around the Raleigh area: Two of the NCSU livestock units got a facelift, and a local landscape received a cleanup and coating of shredded hardwood mulch.
