NC June hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2015 totaled 8.0 million head, down 6% from March 1,
2015. Market hogs, at 7.12 million head, were up 6% from last year but down 6% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 880,000 head, this was up 2% from last year but down 1% last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the March– May 2015 period totaled 4.14 million head, up 8% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 445,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 9.3, which is up from the 8.7 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 440,000 sows during the June–August 2015 and 440,000 during the September– November 2015 quarters. North Carolina currently ranks 3rd nationally, behind Iowa and Minnesota, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
