County growers assess damage from freeze

County apple growers are still assessing the significant damage from a cold Saturday night and Sunday morning, where temperatures dropped to the mid-20s across the county, and as low as 22 in some parts. County Extension Director Marvin Owings said that later this week growers will know better how the frost damaged the county's apple crop, which grossed $32.5 million in 2014. At 28 degrees, apple blossoms start taking damage, at 25 degrees, that damage can be widespread, especially for those varieties furthest along in the bloom. According to a weather station at Trey Enloe's orchard in Edneyville, temperatures dropped as low as 25.9 degrees, at 7 a.m. Sunday. The temperature stayed below the 28-degree threshold for about three hours, starting at a 6 a.m. reading of 27.7 degrees, and ending with a reading of 26.8 at 8 a.m. before warming up to 36.8 at 9 a.m. ...
