USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) proposed adding Poland to the list of countries eligible to export poultry products to the United States.

Poland is the European Union’s top poultry exporter, having doubled its production over a decade to reach 2.2 million metric tons in 2014, FSIS said. The country doubled poultry exports over five years, to 741,000 metric tons in 2014.

FSIS has reviewed Poland’s poultry laws and inspection system and determined they are equivalent to the U.S. food safety system for poultry, FSIS said in proposing the new rule.

If the rule becomes final, Poland would become eligible to export raw, ready to eat and canned poultry products to the United States. Poland currently plans to certify seven chicken establishments for export to the United States, FSIS said.
